this thread has become quite long, and intermixes clear hardware issues
with possible drbd issues.

I try to figure out whether there may be some problems in drbd,
which may be caused by bugs or limitations in drbd,
despite your hardware problems with your NIC.

so when does this "drbd locking" occur, and what are the
symptoms/implications?

 * kernel version, drbd version,
   protocol (a,b,c),
   which connection state?
 * during such a "lock",
   what does /proc/drbd say?
   any kernel log messages?
