We already exchanged the whole bunch of plugged in network cards (before the above described tests there were similar problems, so I thought it would be a good idea to change the NICs), the only thing that stayed the same were the on-board ports (all in all we have 3 interfaces, I tried the private link on different ports, always with problems). The new cards are Intel Pro GT 10/100/1000.
The drivers used:
(on-board)
via_rhine 20900 0
(PCI cards)
e1000 94548 0

The devices:

0000:00:09.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 107c (rev 05)
Subsystem: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 1376
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 10
        Memory at dbfc0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        Memory at dbfa0000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        I/O ports at d400 [size=64]
Expansion ROM at 30000000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [e4] PCI-X non-bridge device.

0000:00:0a.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 107c (rev 05)
Subsystem: Intel Corp.: Unknown device 1376
Flags: bus master, 66MHz, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 5
        Memory at dbf80000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        Memory at dbf60000 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=128K]
        I/O ports at d000 [size=64]
Expansion ROM at 30020000 [disabled] [size=128K]
Capabilities: [dc] Power Management version 2
        Capabilities: [e4] PCI-X non-bridge device.

0000:00:12.0 Ethernet controller: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT6102 [Rhine-II] (rev 78)
        Subsystem: Unknown device 1849:3065
Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 32, IRQ 3
        I/O ports at bc00 [size=256]
        Memory at dbfebd00 (32-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=256]
Capabilities: [40] Power Management version 2

With regards,
