Is there a > reason to compile my own or is it safe to stick with stock? > That inability to compile is a long standing bug/omission in the drbd makefile, search the archives of this ML for "compile drbd 8.4 kernel 3.1". It might be fixed in 8.3.13 which is about to be released soon and I would recommend waiting for that in any case. That said, I've been running 8.3.11 on a Debian box for nearly a year w/o any incidents and 8.3.7 on other boxes for over 2 years w/o a problem.
