So I have a practically identical setup with Intel 82580 NICs. I found
updating the driver fixed some problems, I'm using a 2.3.4 RPM on
CentOS/RHEL 5.5 with success in a balance-rr fashion. However, I've only
tested with DRBD and newer.

# modinfo igb
version: 2.3.4
license: GPL
description: Intel(R) Gigabit Ethernet Network Driver
author: Intel Corporation, <e1000-devel at lists.sourceforge.net>

I can send you the RPM off list if you want to try it.
