It is clear now that DRBD does not write to disk asynchronously (even though the term "memory synchronous" could suggest it) and that 'in-flight requests' refers to replication that has occurred between DRBD daemons on nodes but nothing else on the system sees it on disk yet, rather than something generated by generic_make_request.
