Brian, while not addressing your issue directly, you could try the csums-alg option for syncer. This option will cause the syncer to exchange checksums rather than entire blocks while syncing. Effectively making your sync more like a verify. This will probably work better when the disks are mostly in sync and you have a slow connection. search for: csums-alg at: http://www.drbd.org/users-guide/re-drbdconf.html I used this to great effect in a similar situation.
