9.1 removed the 8.4 compat. So if you really want to do that kind of
upgrade you have to go from 8.4 to 9.0 first.

All in all, if possible, just test 9.1 in a test-cluster and if you
trust it then the easiest way is to just put both sides into standby,
down the resources, load the new module, convert the meta-data, and up
it.
