The upstream master branch currently does not merge cleanly into drbd-8.3-remus. If you (or the branch maintainer) can resolve all the ensuing merge conflicts, then you should be able to build DRBD 8.3 against a current kernel, with these "protocol D" patches. Or, you can try the same for the DRBD 8.4, branch, which means you'll have to merge 1,042 changesets, not 240. Just as a suggestion, this thread should probably be continued on the drbd-dev list.
