If all you will ever want to do is use the entire space on the block
device for DRBD, then just use /dev/sdX as the backing device in drbd.conf.

If you want to carve the block device up into more than one DRBD volume,
or use part of it for something else, you are probably better off using
LVM on the raw disk (pvcreate /dev/foo), and using that as the DRBD
backing store.
