Yeah already checked that (sorry should have said). ethtool reports 1000Mb/s on both nodes for the NICs in question.

Jim,

I had a similar situation on two brand new Dell 1950 servers only to 
find out that my cross over 1GigE NICs were running at 100 half duplex. 
Have you checked speed using ethtool?
