I meant to say "No" here.
that line aparently got lost with the next paragraph asking for a way to
switch it off :)

I guess that the "compression" you see
is called buffer/page cache in linux...

it may also be that our counters are wrong,
or wrongly interpreted... what exactly are the discrepancies you see?
