Just an update. I'm not using gnutar instead of dump and it's working fine now. I'll give that a go. That works for backing up my drbd partitions. I explicitly tell Amanda to back up the same mount point on both servers where the drbd partition mounts. It will only back up the primary server's copy of the data but that's all I need. For what it's worth Linus himself has come out against using dump/restore. He claims it's unreliable and the better option is to use tar/cpio. My first backups were done with dump/restore and can understand why you would want to use it, but on Linux with Amanda gnutar is the better answer. http://lwn.net/2001/0503/a/lt-dump.php3 Brandon Poyner Network Engineer III CCAC - College Office 412-237-3086 -----Original Message----- From: drbd-user-bounces at linbit.com [mailto:drbd-user-bounces at linbit.com] On Behalf Of Kee Gohil Sent: Tuesday, April 26, 2005 7:18 AM To: drbd-user at linbit.com Subject: RE: [DRBD-user] Amanda remote backup Yes - It has the same permissions as /var (for example). /var works fine. Amanda uses "dump" to backup the partitions. The man page for dump says "...either a mountpoint of a filesystem or a list of files and directories to be backed up as a subset of a filesystem. In the former case, either the path to a mounted filesystem or the device of an unmounted filesystem can be used." Because /home is mounted I have to use /home as the dump source. I could try and use /dev/sda8 but that sounds a little scary as it would be bypassing the /dev/drbd0 device.
