do a `telinit 3` on both servers before doing the drbd work.  the `telinit 3`
will put you in runlevel 3 (console mode instead of X) and if the kernel is
OOPs or panicking you can then see the output and all of us might be able help
you more in figuring out what is wrong.

as an aside, I believe it is good practice, on machines that are just servers,
to set them up in runlevel 3 all the time because no one should be logged in
running X apps on the head of servers.  so I would also suggest modifying
/etc/inittab to set 3 as the default.
