if you suspect hardware, do a memtest first...

if you can reproduce the bug at will with the current kernel,
then this is at least worth a try.

yes.
you will get some warnings about new/non existing symbols on the first
run... and I don't know about the user space tools of RH, maybe some of
them will refuse to work on a non-rh kernel. but then they are
screwed...
I guess it should work.
do a "make oldconfig" , and check some of the settings using
"make menuconfig" maybe.
