Ah, thank you: I was unaware of that.

Fair comment. I was thinking only that the path to the replicated
directory should follow symlinks, and thereafter the symlinks can be
replicated, but that's probably not a perfect answer either. Your
suggestion of prefixes will, I think, solve my problem for now.
