I know most people
say ext3 does not fragment, but that it not quite true. Linux is better than
Windows, but not perfect. It does fragment. I have a system hosting multiple
instances of MySQL with maybe 100 separate databases, all of which are being
inserted throughout the day. My iowaits have steadily increased over time and I
believe some of it is due to fragmentation. The real questions are (1) what
is the best way to fix it, and (2) are there any possible repercussions to
defragmenting a filesystem that rides on a DRBD device? I assume the answer
to the second question is no. Does anyone have thoughts on the first
question? What if we just copy all of the data off of the filesystem, rm -rf it,
and then copy it back in? Or should we try to use some kind of ext3
defragmenter?
