I have been pointed to a suggestion for improving it here: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/drbd8/+bug/1185756/comments/82 It suggests that drbdsetup should check the module version and exec drbdsetup83 immediately (i.e. before parsing command options and attempting to communicate with the kernel).
