I saw a reference to that somewhere, but I think the question may be
beyond my level at this point. How can I tell which is being used and
whether it is the culprit?

Most importantly, in about two hours the old primary will finish its
fsck and will start up and re-join the cluster as the new secondary. I
expect it to start a resync at that time. To keep from impacting users,
I will probably pause the sync.

Is there anything else I can do to get to the root of the problem?
