And, you said you are coming from
Debian something (2.6.22/Intel Gb/Drbd 8.???)
to Debian x64 (Lenny) (2.6.36/Intel 10Gb/Drbd 8.3.8.1).

Depending on the value of 8.???,
you may want to read about the drbd config options
 no-disk-barrier, no-disk-flushes, no-md-flushes ...
