turned out to be a rather simple patch, after all, in spite of the
strange symptoms we have been observing during testing.
committed as http://hg.linux-ha.org/dev/rev/47f60bebe7b2

any distribution maintainers reading this?  please consider adding it to
your next heartbeat patch level package.
