If you really want to get raw I/O speed, you should try reiser4.
I've tested a lot of filesystems also in combination with drbd
with bonnie++ with the following settings:
10000 directorys spread
10000000 files
filesizes between 25k and 64k (which is almost the correct size
for my purpose).

Reiser4 was the only filesystem able to saturate the local disk
I/O (I mean in terms of pci busses etc.) with this kind of test.
(any filesystem can do raw I/O with dd..>)
