here we "backport" all changes necessary for kernel inclusion.
aparently we need some major code changes.
I'm confident that these will be improvements.
but along the way this may temporarily destabilize the code,
which we cannot do in a "stable" branch.

so even without new features, but expecting major code restructuring,
this won't stay 8.0 any longer, but is going to be 8.1,
