well, i at least can tell you that i expirience the same behaviour.

whenever i generate a certificate manually with customized values for
cn, location, organisation, etc. csync2 quits with a SIGPIPE originating
somewhere in gnutls_handshake() (my guess).

if i generate the certificate with the default values (e.g. with openssl
req -batch ...) everything works fine.

unfortunately i haven't had time to investigate this issue further, so i
can't offer you a better solution than generating the certificates in
batch mode.
